Frequently Asked Questions continued

Why do athletes with Down syndrome need an X-ray?
In light of medical research indicating that up to 15% of individuals with Down syndrome have Atlanto-axial instability, all persons with Down syndrome should have a lateral x-ray of the cervical spine in hyperflexion and hyperextension. Athletes with Down syndrome and confirmed Atlanto-axial instability may participate in most Special Olympics sports training and competition, but may be limited to certain athletic events. Please contact THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR if your athlete requires special accommodations.

How often do you practice?
Our team generally practices once a week for about two hours. Midway through the season, we will attend an all day tournament sponsored by our regional office. The assessment of our team during these rounds will determine the level of teams we play during the state finals a few weeks later. State Finals are held in a central place, sometimes requiring an overnight stay.
